Lancaster County Motors Employee Provides Hands of Hope

How One Man's Journey Inspires a Community to Drive Change

Introduction

In a world that often feels disconnected, acts of kindness can make an extraordinary impact. This post is about Eric Shellhamer, a Sales & Leasing Consultant at Lancaster County Motors Subaru, who took a simple yet powerful step to help his community. Through his involvement in the “Hands of Hope” food distribution program, Eric not only provides sustenance but also builds meaningful connections with those he serves. In this blog post, we'll explore Eric's motivations, the benefits of his work, and how you can get involved in similar initiatives.

A Personal Connection to Hunger

The Awakening

Eric's commitment to fighting hunger stems from a deeply personal experience. When he read that 1 in 7 children live with hunger, it struck a chord. "That hit home with me because for about a two-year period in my life, I was one of those kids," Eric recalls. Understanding the pain and uncertainty of not knowing where your next meal will come from motivated him to act.

Taking the First Step

It was Eric's priest, Fr. Firoglanis of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, who introduced him to the “Hands of Hope” program. Learning that they needed someone to deliver food to 20 homes in Lancaster City, Eric didn't hesitate. "I'll do it," he said. That simple commitment has turned into a three-year-long mission that continues to this day.

Building Connections

What started as a way to give back has evolved into something much more. Eric has formed close relationships with the families he helps. "Some of the elderly people look forward to my visit, and we catch up on family, pets, and health issues," he shares. These connections have become a source of joy and fulfillment for both Eric and the people he serves.

The Impact of "Hands of Hope"

A Lifeline for Families

The “Hands of Hope” program provides essential food supplies to families in need. For many, this service is a lifeline that ensures they have enough to eat. Eric's deliveries include nutritious food items that can sustain a family for days. The immediate impact of these deliveries is clear—full stomachs and relieved minds. However, the program offers more than just sustenance. It brings a sense of community and support to those who might otherwise feel isolated. Eric's regular visits provide social interaction and emotional support, particularly for elderly residents who may not have frequent visitors.

The benefits of such initiatives extend beyond the immediate recipients. Programs like “Hands of Hope” foster a culture of giving and compassion within the broader community. When people see the positive impact of these efforts, they are often inspired to contribute in their own ways, creating a ripple effect of kindness and support.

How You Can Get Involved

Identify Local Needs

Start by identifying the needs within your own community. Are there food banks, shelters, or support groups that require volunteers? Speaking to local leaders and organizations can provide insight into where your help is most needed.

Leverage Your Skills

Consider how your unique skills and resources can be utilized. Are you good at organizing events, driving, or fundraising? Everyone has something valuable to offer. Eric leveraged his mobility and willingness to connect with people to make his contributions.

Commit Consistently

Consistency is key to making a lasting impact. Eric's three-year commitment to his delivery route has allowed him to build trust and form meaningful relationships. Even if you can only volunteer once a month, regular involvement can lead to significant benefits over time.

Eric Shellhamer's story is a testament to the power of individual action and the profound impact one person can have on their community. His commitment to “Hands of Hope” has not only provided essential support to those in need but has also fostered meaningful connections and inspired others to get involved.

Whether you're a community activist, auto enthusiast, or local resident, there are countless ways to make a difference. Identify local needs, leverage your skills, and commit to consistent involvement. By doing so, you can create positive change and build a stronger, more connected community.

Ready to take the first step? Reach out to local organizations, share your skills, and start making a difference today. Together, we can drive change and create a brighter future for all.
